Welcome to the inaugural edition of The Monthly Write-up. I’m so glad you came. Here, you’ll find a few of my favorites from July.
Let’s get to it:
1. “Father John Misty’s Quest to Explain Himself” By Nick Paumgarten, The New Yorker
Whether you love him, can’t stand him or have no idea who I’m talking about, this most recent profile on Father John Misty from The New Yorker is a must read. (Take it from someone who has read pretty much every article on Father John Misty that’s out there).
2. Chance the Rapper’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert
Chance can do no wrong, and this Tiny Desk Concert, where he shows us a beautifully vulnerable softer side of himself, proves it.
3. “Debating Wonder Woman and Summer Jams” – Still Processing
Still Processing is the Podcast of New York Times critic-at-large Wesley Morris and New York Times Magazine staff writer (and my current female celebrity crush and idol) Jenna Wortham. I love listening to Wes and Jenna talk about all things pop/culture related, but the back half of this particular episode where they debate their picks for Song of the Summer had me laughing out loud and dancing on my walk home.
Mogul, the latest Podcast from Gimlet Media and Loud Speakers Network, chronicles “the life and death of Chris Lighty”, who was one of the world’s most prominent hip-hop execs before he took his life in 2012. It’s a six-part narrative that’s a combination of the biographical/investigative elements of S-Town and Missing Richard Simmons with the musical elements of Song Exploder, while also offering a really important exploration of Black masculinity and mental health. My only complaint? I want more.
5. The Baby Driver soundtrack
Baby Driver is the movie of the Summer if you’re a music nerd. For me, the music themes and actual use of music in the movie was just as exhilarating as the high-speed car chases. Check out this playlist, but really, go see the movie.
6. “Build You Up” Music Video – Kamaiyah
Where you at, Bay Area? Oakland’s very own Kamaiyah heads back to her hometown to give you a dose of positivity and 90s nostalgia in her latest single “Build You Up”. If only taking BART was actually that much fun.
7. “Boys” Music Video – Charlie XCX
Catchy summer pop tune? Check.
Flipping female objectification on it’s head? Check.
Appearances by some of music and entertainment’s coolest dudes? Check.
These “boys” also subverting our normal ideas of masculinity? Check.
Yeah, this is up my alley. Not to mention we get to watch Dave 1 and P-Thugg of Chromeo have a pillow fight. Check out the full list of appearances here.
That’s all for July! Be sure to check back at the end of August for the next edition, or better yet, never miss anything from The Monday Lineup by subscribing to my email list (there’s a box on the top right side of this screen!).
